Shaptowicz! Sherod! O'Hara! Cassady!
Poetry readings at 7pm-8pm on First Friday
Those of you that have ever attended the bi-weekly Poetry slam and open mic at Infusion called Fuze will recognize the names above as several of the talented poets that host Fuze or are regular performers at it.

After recently attending Fuze and meeting Jane Cassady I started carrying some of the poetry books they produce. I am happy to say that Jane and the others have all agreed to come and read this First Friday. We will be having two sets, one at 7pm and the other at 8pm. Appearing will be ...

SHEROD SMALLMAN is your beloved Philly Slammaster.

SHAPPY SEASHOLTZ was the surly barkeep at the Bowery Poetry Club for its first eight years, and slammaster & host of their weekly poetry slam, NYC-Urbana. He & the NYC-Urbana Team won the 2002 National Poetry Slam. He has toured with Lollapalooza, was featured on season three of HBO'S Def Poetry and has been running the National Nerd Slam for over a decade. He tours constantly and publishes widely. He is the chosen one.

CRISTIN O'KEEFE APTOWICZ is the author of five books of poetry, most recently "Everything is Everything." She is also the the author of the nonfiction book, "Words In Your Face: A Guided Tour Through Twenty Years of the New York City Poetry Slam," which Billy Collins wrote "leaves no doubt that the slam poetry scene has achieved legitimacy and taken its rightful place on the map of contemporary literature." Most recently, Aptowicz was named the 2010-2011 ArtsEdge Writer-In-Residence at the University of Pennsylvania to work on a book about Thomas Dent Mutter, founder of the Philadelphia's (in)famous Mutter Museum.

MICHAEL O'HARA builds robots, creates medicine, designs surgical implants, stands up to bullies, breaks balls, talks shit, tells the truth, stretches the truth, drinks vodka, drinks coffee, tutors calculus, celebrates Halloween, drives a car, officiates weddings, avoids bad television, avoids cops and writes poetry. He has performed poetry in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Washington State and Maryland. He is thankful for everything he has, will have, and will lose.

JANE CASSADY writes pop-culture horoscopes for the City Paper's Arts and Culture Blog, Critical Mass. She is the Slam Mistress of the Philadelphia Poetry Slam. Her poems have appeared in The November 3rd Club, The Comstock Review, Valley of the Contemporary Poets, and other journals. She's performed at such venues as LouderArts in New York City, Valley Contemporary Poets in Los Angeles, and The Encyclopedia Show in Chicago.

Artwork by Sanny Williams

When local artist Sanny Williams came in to show me her artwork I was blown away. Her work is fantastic and varied. Sanny works in a variety of mediums and ranges from realistic portraits to abstracts that focus on the human form. They instantly spoke to me and I think you'll delight in them as well.

Her works diminutive size makes it affordable to most and she also produces hand painted t-shirts in her people meeting series which is the pink image above, also shown is her portrait of Miles Davis.

Stop in this First Friday to see her work and meet the artist.

Sanny's Bio:
I am from Rotterdam, Holland, and grew up in a creative family. I graduated from the University Utrecht with a BFA sculpture. During this time i concentrated on "Drawings in Space" consisting of welded steel and soldered wire. One year after completing my BFA i moved to Albany, NY. to be with my husband. Here we founded Changing Spaces Gallery. Our mission was to interact between different art forms. We hosted art shows, music performances, poetry nights, independent film, micro theater and organized a multi-media arts festival called Fire & Ice.

Now we live in Philadelphia where i work in my studio. I paint musician portraits and make 2 and 3 dimensional work. My work has recurrent themes like memory, experience, ancestors and environment.

My latest abstract work is called 'People Meeting'. I build each painting up line by line. In the first few lines i use rhythm and direction from that moment. During this time i think instinct. The lines that follow are all reactions on each other. I let parts come together grow higher until the people appear.
